Practical Tips for Your Blue Hill Peninsula Adventure
Chelsea and I love it here, and we know our guests to love it, too. That means being prepared for the “real” Maine outdoors. Here’s the straight talk on how to handle the local elements like a pro:
- The Winged Locals: Depending on when you visit, you might meet up with black flies (late May thru mid-June) and our “unofficial state birds”—mosquitoes (mid-June through August). Keeping some bug spray handy, as well as long sleeves and pants for hiking or gathering around the fire pit, helps a lot.
- Trail Etiquette: Our coastal trails are beautiful, but you’ll likely have to navigate “roots and rocks.” Sturdy shoes will be your best friend when exploring the many hiking options and shoreline. Reserve the flip-flops and sandals for around the house and exploring the peninsula villages. 🥾
- The “Avoid” List: We do have deer ticks and Browntail Moth caterpillars in the area. Get into the habit of a tick check after a hike, and stay on the marked paths to stay comfortable and itch-free.
- Pack for the Maine Weather: We love our variety of weather here—it may be 27°C (80°F) midday and a foggy 13°C (55°F) that evening. Pack layers that can be added or removed as needed. 🧥
- Swimming in the Bay: There’s no getting around it—the ocean is darn cold. If you are hardy and determined, go for it! We recommend the tidal coves where the water is a little warmer, and wearing water shoes is always a smart move.
The Reward: You’ll have a wonderful visit and make memories that will last a lifetime.
