“The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea.”
~ Isak Dinesen
We couldn’t agree more — and we’d add one thing: a tidal pond that hides a secret waterfall doesn’t hurt either.
We’re so excited to introduce two new properties to the Blue Hill Bay Property Rentals family: Captain Black House in South Brooksville, right on the edge of Bucks Harbor, and Loon Point in Blue Hill, with the Salt Pond practically at your doorstep. Two very different experiences. Two very special corners of the peninsula. Both utterly Maine.
Bucks Harbor: Where Time Forgot to Rush
If you’ve ever read One Morning in Maine to a child (or had it read to you), you already know Bucks Harbor — you just may not have realized it. Robert McCloskey drew his inspiration for that beloved 1952 classic right here, in this tucked-away little village in South Brooksville. The white-steepled church, the general store, the boats in the harbor — it’s all still here. And honestly? It hasn’t changed all that much.
That’s the magic of Bucks Harbor.
The Buck’s Harbor Yacht Club has been here since 1905, and on a summer morning you can watch the sailing classes head out, sails catching the breeze off Eggemoggin Reach — the same Reach that’s been drawing sailors and cruisers to this harbor for over a century. It’s considered one of the best hurricane holes on the Maine coast, which tells you something about how well-sheltered and beautiful it is.
Stop into Buck’s Harbor Market for coffee and conversation. Watch a lobster boat come in. Sit on the dock and do absolutely nothing for a while. You’ll be surprised how easy it is.
Captain Black House puts you right in the middle of all of it. The property sits right next to Buck’s Harbor Marina, where guests can rent a mooring if they’re bringing their own boat — and for sailors, that alone might be reason enough to book. The property also has a shared dock — shared with a few family members, which somehow makes it feel even more like the real Maine experience — and it’s a wonderful launching point for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, or simply a place to cool off with a swim and watch the harbor do its thing. We’ll have full details on the listing page, but if the name alone doesn’t charm you, just wait until you see the view.

The Salt Pond: Four Miles of Tidal Magic
The Blue Hill Salt Pond is one of those places that locals know and tourists drive right past — and we think it’s time to change that.
This four-mile-long tidal saltwater pond connects to the ocean through a narrow passage beneath the Route 175 bridge — and when the tide comes in, that passage becomes Blue Hill Falls, one of Maine’s most famous reversing falls. Kayakers and canoeists come from all over to paddle the calm, protected waters of the pond and then hover near the bridge to watch (or brave!) the rushing tidal surge. It’s part nature spectacle, part local sport, and completely entertaining whether you’re in a kayak or just cheering from the bank.
But the Salt Pond isn’t all thrills. Paddle away from the falls, and it’s pure peace — herons standing in the shallows, ospreys overhead, the smell of salt air and pine, the quiet lap of water against your hull. It’s a birder’s paradise, a paddler’s dream, and one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve found something most people miss.
Loon Point brings you home to all of it — and then some. The property has its own private dock, which means the Salt Pond is yours to explore on your schedule. Kayak, canoe, paddleboard, swim — or just sit on the dock as the tide shifts and the herons mind their own business nearby. Whether you spend your days on the water or simply watching the light change over the pond from a comfortable chair, this property delivers that deep exhale that only Maine can give you.

We’re so proud to welcome Captain Black House and Loon Point to our little collection of special properties. As always, we hand-pick the homes we represent, and these two are no exception.
If you have questions, want to know more about either property, or just want to talk about why the Blue Hill Peninsula is the best-kept secret on the Maine coast — give us a call or send us a note. We love talking about this place almost as much as we love living here.
